Filling Walls Without Opening the House
Retrofit Wall Insulation fills the empty or thinly insulated walls of a house that is already built. Census figures summarized by Point2Homes show that about 29% of Santa Rosa's homes were built before 1970, and many of those went up with little or nothing in the exterior walls. Walls are a large share of a house's outside surface, so filling them makes rooms noticeably more even, especially rooms with two or three exterior walls.
Dense-pack from outside or inside
The most common method is dense-pack cellulose or fiberglass blown through small holes drilled in each stud bay, either from outside (behind siding, which is then patched or replaced) or from inside (through drywall or plaster, then patched and painted). Dense-pack fills around wiring and blocking and cuts air leaks through the wall. HomeGuide lists dense-pack cellulose at $1.60 to $4.20 per square foot.
Foam when walls are open
If you are remodeling, re-siding or rebuilding after damage, open walls are the best chance for spray foam. Open-cell fills 2x4 and 2x6 cavities and seals them; closed-cell adds more R-value per inch where depth is short. ENERGY STAR's guidance for zone 3 also suggests adding R-5 insulating sheathing under new siding when the old siding comes off.
What we check first
Before filling walls we check for live knob-and-tube wiring (which should not be buried in insulation), plumbing in exterior walls, signs of moisture and the condition of siding and stucco. Stucco homes are usually filled from inside.
Where it helps most
Rooms over garages, corner bedrooms, and walls facing west that take the late-afternoon sun on hot days.
Which homes are good candidates
Homes built before about 1970 are the most likely to have empty walls. You can sometimes check by removing an outlet cover on an exterior wall (power off) and looking beside the box. We confirm on the visit with a small test hole or by looking in from the attic.
Re-siding and remodel timing
If you are planning new siding, windows or a remodel in the next few years, tell us. Insulating while walls are open costs less and allows foam or rigid sheathing.

Retrofit Wall Insulation Questions
Can you insulate walls without removing drywall?
Yes. Dense-pack goes in through small holes, from outside or inside, and the holes are patched.
What about stucco walls?
Stucco houses are usually filled from inside, through drywall or plaster, to avoid cutting the stucco.
Is spray foam an option for closed walls?
Injection foams exist, but for closed walls dense-pack is usually the more reliable and affordable choice.
Does wall insulation help with noise?
Yes, filled walls cut outside and room-to-room noise noticeably.
Will you damage my siding?
On wood siding we usually lift or remove a course of boards, drill behind it and put it back. Shingles can often be drilled through and plugged. Stucco is filled from inside. The method is spelled out in the quote.
Which walls should I do first?
West- and south-facing walls and rooms with several exterior walls usually give the most noticeable change.
